“Gods once belonged to places, not to creeds, ethnicities, or high bidders. Perhaps the ancients knew the truth, and gods really aren’t portable. If so, this is not an introduction but an invocation of the gods of the only Gulf States west of the Mississippi River, the most powerful channel of good and evil in our country. That power is distributed and rests ultimately in the mysterious Gulf of Mexico, giver and taker of life. On behalf of these poets, I place this volume as an offering for that Gulf ’s feast.”
